Vocabulary activities

1. Use the following suffixes/prefixes to form different parts of speech.

2. Match a line in A with a line in B to make a compound noun/adjective.

3. Match the phrases with their translation.

4. Match the phrasal verbs with their equivalents in your native language.

5. Match the words to their synonyms/opposites.

6. Match the parts of the phrases.

7. Rewrite sentences using the word in italics in a different word class (e.g. We had a long discussion … . We discussed … for a long time.)

8. Find the words in the text to match the definitions given below.

9. Work out the meanings from the context. Don’t use a dictionary.

10. Find the odd word out.

11. Look at the following groups of words. Which four of the surrounding words in each group cannot go with the noun in the center.

12. In each of the boxes below, one or two of the nouns do not go with the verb in the middle. Draw a line to show which nouns can go with the verb.

13. These words have more than one meaning. Write two sentences that show different meanings. Use a dictionary (e.g. book, kind, can, mean, flat, play, train, ring).
